Thanks for this but I don't think it gives the answer.
I can start the machine and it runs normally but certain things seem to make it die - Symantec WinDoctor, SpyBot & J16 Power Tools on Registry scan, for example. The PC has all of the latest WinXP Pro patches and drivers etc and the latest Symantec virus definitions and according ti Symantec Antivirus is clean.
What is the error you are getting on the BSOD? If it is rebooting before you can transpose the information do the following...in safe mode if possible since the crashes are intermittent:

Right Click on My Computer
Select Properties
Click on the Advanced Tab
Click on the Settings Button in the Start-up and Reovery Panel
Remove the Check beside "Automatically Restart"
Click OK

Now reboot you PC. Next time you get the BSOD post the error message.
Hi

I suspect a faulty RAM

1. Check this article from MS Knoweldge base

Do u have single 1 GB RAM of multiple sticks combining as 1 GB.

If u have multiple stucks, then take out some and try. leave there 512 MB first

then test with the other 512 MB

All the RAM tests fine and the error still orrurs with either of the RAM chips in either slot, either on their own or together.

The error report from the BSOD is
Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area

Hi Alex,
I don't have any Lexar hardware or drivers installed so I'll try a repair installation over the weekend and let you know how it goes.
Best regards
quartzaudio

Perfect. I'll wait for the feedback

Hi Alex,
Subsequently found that the trouble was a corrupted registry at hkey_local_machine\software\classes but whenever you try to access the area via regedit (or any other way) it causes the BSOD.
Because the version of XP was pre-installed by IBM there is no option of recovery/repair and a disk format must happen and complete "start again" from purchase point :-(
If you give me a quick reply I'll have the option to give you the points anyway for all the help you gave.
Many thanks and best regards
quartzaudio

Hi Quartzaudio,
         Thanks for that update.

How did u find out that corrupt registry key.

OK. As for ur registry corruption,

Try REGEDIT in safe mode with command prompt

go to c:\windows prompt
type REGEDIT  and open registry editor to delete the corrupt registry key.

All the best

Alex

Alternatively, if that doesn't work

If u have windows XP preinstalled, IBM must have provided a backup copy of setup folder i386 on ur drive

Search for i386 folder on ur drive

if one exists in ur C:\                                 don't work with c:\windows\driver cache\i386 folder
i386 folder is a big setup folder and shud contain various files and subfolders
then that's the one, U can reinstall with
Run the WINNT32.EXE from the folder

Start->Run->c:\i386\winnt32.exe
chose 'Upgrade Recommended' as install type
Follow the prompts

If u don't have the disk, can purchase a disk for XPPro full version for new computers.

All the best. keep me posted

Hi Alex,
Sorry for the delay but I think i'm in a very different time zone to you!
A quick update:-
Found the registry error by seeing that each time SystemWorks or other program which scanned registry created the crash - then used a couple of registry scanners to scan one portion at a time until found the problem area.
Unfortunately, now cannot use regedit (or anything else!) to get into registry in either normal or safe mode.
Have found the IBM i386 back-up and will purchase a new full XPPro for new computers and follow your suggestion.
Thanks again
quartzaudio

Thank U QuartzAudio. I was anxious!!!

All the best for next try
