Control panel problem ME

hello Experts, I have Windows ME partition 2. Win 98 se partition 1.Partition 1 fine no problems at all. Partition 2 ME I have difficulty opening control panel. Start/ settings/ control panel, it takes 10 seconds to open the window, 60 seconds to show half of the icons and total time of 90 seconds to show all 37 icons. It used to be fine i have messed up somewhere. I have run online scanners and I think I am virus free. I have tried other ways of opening CP [my comp] but the same result. Sometimes the icons are slow to finish and are in basic form. I dont have an ME disc. Ta very much [Wales UK]

hello jvuz, i got 'cannot find sfc/scannow' message.
missing ?

Try this Icon Cache fix:

http://aumha.org/downloads/iconca.zip

Quoting http://www.aumha.org/reg1.htm:
Having trouble with icon refresh and display? Maybe your icon cache is too small. This popular patch will expand it. HINT: It’s also been known to solve the common problem of slow Windows Explorer browsing. Edit the numbers to suit yourself — the values in the patch will work for most people. (Original concept by MS-MVP Tom Koch. This expanded version provided by Andreas Kaestner.)
ADVISORY: This should not be used in WinXP. See the WinXP version below.

Go to start-run and type 'without the " ") "sfc /scannow" (make sure there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

jvuz,

There is no System File Checker utility in Windows ME.

I have increased icon cache size to max no difference and to minimum no diff. The hard disc is idle between the three working periods. no light on.

You may want to try a System Restore to a date prior to your current problem.

Wonder if you have just too many programs running in the background on Partition 2, Me, slowing your system?
A common problem!         You may like to look here:

This one describes the function of each program in MSCONFIG :

Hi
Hope you've managed to solve your problem before you read this but if not...
I'm not a tech person (graphics are my forte) but this sounds very similar to a problem we had a while back - when we first tried networking our ME machines to a 98 one, the 98 worked fine (as it always had) but the ME would not load the icons in the control panel and when we went to network neighbourhood the whole damn thing hung and crashed - eventually after two new computers and three network cards we gave up running 98 and ME side by side - that cured the problem.  From my uneducated point of view it seems that ME does not like any other OS (hell it even hates itself at times lol).  Is there any way you can try running without the 98 partition (like I said I know bugger all about the techie stuff) this may at least indicate if there is a conflict between the two.  Most people I've talked to agree with me that if given the chance they would never have ME anywhere near their computer - moral of the story... if you can live without it do so.  This probably doesn't solve your problem but at least you know you're not alone - good luck.

Ta, for the help. Could be a ME thing. i have 128 ram 32 ati graphics. the first start file is control ini ? is this checkable or am I barking. While icons are loading, the page is frozen, but ,other programmes open and work ok at same time.  90% sys free.

hamsjo,

Have you used the Icon cache patch I posted above?

It made a great difference in my WinME...

hello and thanks, SORTED, after reading info at
http://www.aumha.org/a/health.htm I found a reference in C/Panel to 'IBM' [which had been partly deleted and would not open] but after going 'regedit' there was a whole registry key and contents which could not be accessed. After making a reg backup I deleted this key and BINGO all is ok. Thanks for your time and
bye from a very cold mid wales UK.

Thank you and glad you're back in business.
