W95.spaces.1445 damaged backup files

With some difficulty I managed to open my computer and my simply accounting program long enough to back up my files to a CD rom on a networked computer. I then reformated my hard drive and reinstalled my programs. When I try to restore my backup file I get an error message "failure decompressing data". I noticed that on the networked computer with myCD burner whenever I tried to install a program I was unable to open the files because the file size didn't jive. I had someone look at my backup file and was told that the file size is somehow listed wrong as well. I purchased Norton antivirus and discovered that I had W95.Spaces.1445 among other viruses. My dilemma is that without my backup I am totaly screwed to say the least because I overwrote my good backup with the damaged one. Is it possible to somehow salvage or repair my backup files.

If NAV is not able to repair the infection then you only can try some other antivirus software. W95.Spaces.1445 is infecting .EXE files. If it overwrites some binary code instead of appending its code to the .EXE file no antivirus software will be able to repair it. If you don't have a good backup then you won't be able to repair your backup files. You may then try a professional data recovery service to bring back your data before reformating the drive on the other computer. That's very expensive but if the data is important it might be worth the money.

The problem has nothing to do with a virus. I have scaned both the new and old computer and they are clean. For some reason the function doesn't work on the old or new system? Thanks for the info, I wish it was a virus to be honest, at least i would know the cause.
Thanks
