For the last few months I've been unable to acces Windows Update. I get to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp and "Scan for Updates" but this then takes me an error page:

Windows update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page

Send error number to Microsoft 0x800A138F

Greetings, henrib!

If the above does not work, use this Windows Update Trouble Shooter

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#w_update

Alternative way to download Windows and other updates. Use Bigfix.

Best wishes, war1
is your copy of windows a legite copy??
You may need to load the updated Security Cert for the site.  Try logging in to the URL as https://etc...
You can also go here and download the updates to your computer to install later either to update your's or for someone else to use that may not have internet access..

Success!

I deleted the Program Files\Windowsupdate\V4 directory, leaving only iuhist.xml and it worked.

Thanks for all the help, I'm very impressed with the level of expertise (hence the name I suppose) and the speed with which it is available.  Best $9.95 I've spent in ages.

I'll be back.
