asked on

how do i cure a shell32.dll error that has brought my pc to a halt?

i am ashamed to confess how this has happened...somehow an extra my documents file showed up in explore and i decided to drag and combine the 2 instead of dragging the contents to one of the document files and deleting the other...since then, i have had an error showing on desktop ..............  program>>>illegal operation, etc....EXPLORER caused a stack fault in module SHELL32.DLL at 0167 : 6680f389......................thought i would try to fix in safe mode but the error shows there too...boot to desktop and click in normal or safe mode all i want and i go nowhere...no response at all...tried the bootdisk to no avail....tried with my apparent limited knowledge with dos utilities...short of a format, i am at the end of my rope...hope  my frustration and futility finds a sympathetic soul who knows what i have done...thanks in advance...

hi Luxana...would have tried some of the links...but...at desktop or safe mode, the error message [ stack fault ]remains and i can not navigate...any solution will have to come by using the bootup disk and dos...A:\>....if there's another way to go or remove the error message, i am unaware............hope someone knows............
Hi ecedwards ...

Which from this links above is sutable in your problem? Have you try this: Disable Plug-In for Windows. To do so, remove Plugin.exe from the Startup folder or from the "load=" line in the Win.ini file in the Windows folder, and then restart your computer. Look at this link I have a similar problem. Maybe you will find out your solution. http://oldlook.experts-exchange.com/questions/20765992/Error-message.html#9552393 . And one link abou is poiting to Compaq coputer. Do you have compaq? Let me know have you doing!
found below info at link   http://www.computerhope.com/rdebug.htm#7
Implement this debug routine to reboot your computer......will need someone's help/confidence to do it if appropriate action...thanks>>>

Hallo ecedwards

This debug above is only for rebut computer from command promt. I do not thik that we need it. I schow you my link beacause there is one option what I'm going  try right now. Check this:

You can also install W98 over the top of the previous one.

To do so renamen win.com to win.old. When boot the PC press F8 until you see a menu. Select the option that says COMMAND PROMPT ONLY.

Then follow these instructions:

C:>CD WINDOWS
C:\WINDOWS>REN WIN.COM WIN.OLD
C:\WINDOWS>

Reboot the PC and install W98 again. Make sure that the map where windows will be installed is WINDOWS and NOT WINDOWS.000.

With this method you don't loose any data and all the programs will be working. The only thing that can happen is that you must reinstall DirectX.

If you want to try this just get a boot disk win98 and let me know  I can navigate you.

I hope I get your point....

hello to all...spent nearly all day yesterday trying and trying...............from this link  http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~kthompson/programfault.html....did #2 under recovery options...twice...the first time i botched something and ended with a new error message...tried and succeeded in getting into safe mode...ran sfc...nothing showed up out of order...looked for the extra documents file in explore but did not see it...redid the loading of windows over itself per the instructions in the link...seemed to go perfectly but ended with my old error message and back to square one...will the renaming and recopying windows per above be any different???...just in off the road and very tired...will try the new solutions above...been inop since sunday...everything i have ever read and been my experience too>>>never had a illegal shutdown error not cure itself with a reboot....usually led to removing or reinstall of a program....wondering if i were able to uninstall or delete iexplorer cure the ill.......please remember i am only able to navigate thru and by the boot disk....wondering too if this is the kiss of death ...hate to see my little hp suffer like this ...thanks to all.....back asap
hello...recopied win98 files over itself again per #2 recovery options above...all seemed to go well but ended with same error message...not able to access scanreg/ restore or fix thru bootdisk...nor do i have access to the dos prompt to end at c:\windows...cdrom apparently inop also...could access edit system.ini but do not know how to edit within...will need some direction to do any editing of lines...ready for a ray of sunshine!
Luxana...i am not able to access files to rename
hallo ecedwards

Why you are not able to acces files? Do you have more then one particion on your HDD?. Because what I did was that I just copied win.com to another particion D:. And then start new instalattion win98 with setup /is /ie /iq  and when windows ask me first time to restart cocmputer I simply put my win98 system disk to drive and from command promt I delete the newone win.com from c:\windows and then I put back win.com from my D: particion back. No setting was changed and I've got fresh win98. That was just option that you have to rename win.com but you can copy ite somewhere else and then put it back.

to edit system.ini from dos promp siply type EDIT and then file name which you want edit.

good luck.... let me know how you doing....
Amd one more thing . I guess that you could not run scanreg because you did not have enough conventional memory. Windows Registry Checker may require 580 KB or more of free conventional memory to complete the repair process. If you encounter an "Out of Memory" error message, optimize your free conventional memory.
hello again...spent most of yesterday spinning my wheels again...another recopy failed...my hard drive is not partitioned...wish i knew why i can not acces my files...or documents...not able to click start to run anything...frozen...same for attempts to explore...will try to do some more searching for edit system.ini info....have tried to run my recovery disk...no go...same for the win98cd as i have both...no go...the bootup disk always refers to cdrom as drive e, one notch up from the usual d...my pc came designated cdrom as drive m...should i or the bootdisk be referring to cdrom as drive n...when i boot to apparent dos with bootdisk, ends at A:\>...when i try scanreg /restore or fix, says bad command....if i move to C:\>windows, same answer..........all i have been able to do so far from the bootdisk is run some of the tools in the help  menu, recopy all windows files +- 35minutes without cd, and a few responses[ discovered yesterday] from some of my desktop shortcuts...ran defrag from there...and probably botched the registry by cleaning with toni arts utility there...if you can dig yourself deeper without a shovel, i seem to be doing just that.........
ok...

are you able to copy win.com to your floppy? ( win.com size is around 25kb)
a:\copy c:\windows\win.com a:\

are you able see cd-rom from command promt?

do yu have a win98 install disk on your HDD?

Are you able to run setup.exe win98 file from command promt?

Do you have for example partition magic safe disks?
are you able to copy win.com to your floppy? ( win.com size is around 25kb)
a:\copy c:\windows\win.com a:\  >>>>>>>>>>took bootdisk out...put fresh floppy in...says copied 1 file from command given above...finished with a:\> prompt

are you able see cd-rom from command promt?>>>>i do not understand this one

do yu have a win98 install disk on your HDD?>>>>i do not know...have done what i have done in the past from recovery disk...sometimes it will start, other times would not go

Are you able to run setup.exe win98 file from command promt?>>>>do not know how to answer this one either...have copied win98 over itself 3 times now from whatever is presently installed on hd thru the bootdisk commands starting at a:\ and following recovery instructions given in the link referred to above

Do you have for example partition magic safe disks?
have doubled the points...i may have to have my hand held on this one...

MY KINGDOM FOR A CURE!!!
Ok a think I should teach you some basic dos commands:

1/when you copied this win.com to floppy and you are in a:\ just type DIR and you will see all files and directories. But it seems like you copied this file to floppy. But double check it !!!!

2/ When you are booting from floppy systwm disk win98 it will ask you to use cd-rom or not !!! When you choose yes and like you said you do not have ather particions you sould be able to see cd rom like letter e: and d: is your virtual disk. All what I want you to do is:

1/ Copy this win.com file to floppy I think it is done:))) but check  again it it is important !!!!
2/ boot with cdrom support
3/ put you instalation disk win98 to cd-rom
4/ then
a:\>e:
e:\>cd win98
e:\>win98>setup /is /ie /iq
5/ let install win98 copy files. Install folder will be c:\windows not c:\windows.000
6/ Now it will be important !!! First time when win98 ask you to restart put the win98 booot floppy and boot to dos then:
a:\>copy win.com c:\windows
overwrite? yes
1 file copied
Then pull out the floppy and reboot. If you cant do this point don't let boot you PC to system and tell me what is wrong!!!

Try it and then tell me if you were able todo this points if not let me know wich point you could not done.

And one more question:
do you have some important data on you PC or why you are so worried? If you dont have nothing important on your pc it will be easier.

good luck
Luxana...hope you are close by...just started from several replies above...

You can also install W98 over the top of the previous one.

To do so renamen win.com to win.old. When boot the PC press F8 until you see a menu. Select the option that says COMMAND PROMPT ONLY.

Then follow these instructions:

Reboot the PC and install W98 again. Make sure that the map where windows will be installed is WINDOWS and NOT WINDOWS.000.

with bootup disk i went from a to c   and ended with cd \windows\options\cabs\setup to prep for recopy of win98

i never saw any map indications for the  caution of windows vs.windows.000

will hold for a bit to see if you are availabe...before i leap
just cancelled the above and will attempt your newest comment
have booted with cdrom support to a:   ...win.com is on a separate floopy...checked out ok at 24.2kb.........put it in and typed dir and response is a list of files...bootdisk back in and at a:\>
bootdisk in typed dir...21 files listed...
e:\>cd win98

CDR101:Not ready reading drive E
i have most of my data backed up but there is very important data, esp. a few jpg's that i do not want to lose...not much but i should have backed up before this event........worried ...yes...thinking this computer may be done for and will have to take the hd $omewhere  for $urgery and data recovery...ironically, i was just before copying the little bit of important data and doing a format...i still have not learned to stay off the pc when i am tired...too, at 57 senility is slowly creeping in...and slowly may not be slowly anymore
OK

I asked you because we have two options:
first is that what I'm trying to do now do not lost any configuration and your data or  the second is format your HDD and make a two partictions ( in the future it will be easy to reinstall your win98) and install win98 from a scratch.
But I thing we will try first and then if it do not help we have to move to second option.

this error e:\>cd win98

CDR101:Not ready reading drive E

means:

a/ your folder where you ahve your cabs is called or is somewhere else
b/ you did not have your win98 instalation cd in cd-rom

To finf out what is on your cd-rom typ DIR and you shold have a folder win98 on cd-rom. To move into folder type cd [and folder which you want move in]. try it againg and here you have a basic DOS commands :

http://www.cs.unca.edu/~jkdawg/help/msdos.html

let me know how you doing....

hello again...still have not been able to do as outlined above...just about to the conclusion the problem is either me or the pc or both...i am confident the info above would solve the problem but my access to the means to do it has come up short...if i am to rename win.com to win.old  thru explore, the pc does not respond...somewhere along the way the pc screen said it could not find win.com...cab folder may be elsewhere as the cd was in the cdrom in above...have already confessed my cdrom does not function as it should...nothing ever showed up in device manager to reveal  any problem...settings too were checked for auto start, etc...i probably would have opted for a format but i fear after i format and the cdrom does not respond, my cpu is dead...just about ready to send up the white flag...if no bolt of lightning shows soon, i will allocate points and move on...thanks esp. to Luxana and Alex..........................................
Hallo

do not format yet. Nothing ist lost!!! I thing we have some missunderstading.

1/ do not rename win.com if you have it on floppy !!!
2/ All tasks above you have to do in dos promt a did not ask you to boot until we have not install new files to your win.
3/ In which poit above we stucked?
4/ When you are booting from boot disk and you select boot with CD-rom support after thet asi atapi driver assghned you schold see there something like NUMBER OF DRIVES: x whot neber do you have there 1 or 0?
5/ on the end of booting you will see which number was assgned to you CD-ROM
6/ Do you have instalationdiskswin98 on your HDD or you have it on CD-ROM?
win.com is on floppy but i do not know when to use it....i do not even remember where i got it from at this point in time...ms-dos name is win.com...name is win...application file...location a:...24.2kb size...on floppy................from bootup disk>>>>number of drives is 1.........at the end of the bootup it says DRIVE E: DRIVER MSCD001 UNIT 0......the windows recopy thus far has come from my HDD...from cab files or backups, i do not know...shows the same routine as the cd version of win98, which i have also...i am currently using my old gateway 2000 with a pentium II 233 process...came with win95 and i recently upgraded it to win98se and increased sdram from 32mb to 161...did it all myself, if you can believe it after all the above...slow system but broadband helps a lot...if we can ever get the error off the hp so's i can get a bit of data that i value, the hp may blow if it needs to...

at e:\dir, i get >>>CDR101:Not ready reading drive E  abort, retry, fail?

again, my cdrom came new designated cdrom dive letter as M, if this is important???
Ok...so only change letter E: in my messages to letter M: ite does not matter which letter as long as you get it working.......try do same with M: letter....
still not working....says invalid drive specification, then goes back to E:\>

sorry
Are you suer that you have your cd in CD-ROM? Try another cd and type E:\>dir if you can see what is on cd....
When you boot from win98boot floppy disk with support the cd-rom drive on the end you shold get message something like this:

MSCDEX Version 2.25
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp. 1986-1995. All rights reserved.
           Drive x: = Driver MSCD001 unit 0

I wont to know what is the x letter in your case. You should have there E: letter don't you?
tried the recovery cd and it responded with contents..............do not understand because i used this cd to install on gateway within the last month....will the recovery cd help while in ms dos?   tried to start it before from error on desktop and would not go................
just put win98 cd in gateway and started just fine
So it means that your windows cd is not working? Do you have another cd? Or if you have those instalation files on you c: driver it will be good. You need this files:

Volume in drive E is Windows 98
 Volume Serial Number is 1984-D1F5

 Directory of E:\win98
