try to:

Go to Start >
Run and type SFC and click OK.

or

Restore the registry.
Go to Start > Run and type scanreg /reg.
Choose a date before this problem occurred.

Hallo guys....

The scanreg and sfc did not help. The error message is still there each time I restart computer. I do not want reinstall computer because on this comp is too much setings. And It will take me few hours to set the computer up.  Is there possibility to change the kernel32.dll manualy? Because the SFC did not ask me for replace this file.

thank for help
Hi Luxana,

If you install windows as I subscribed above you DON'T loos ANY data. All the settings will be the same as before. The only thing that changes is that the files that windows used will be replaced.

Oh.. I forgot something above. If you install W98 use the following command line to start the setup:

setup /is /ie /iq

This will skip the following procedures:
- Create a bootfloppy will be passed.
- Scanreg will not be performed.

This to make sure that windows just install and don't want to repair the register.
hello...none of the links referred to point to stack faults...i only see references to page faults.......again, i am not able to get a response to start/run or explore........or anything at desktop since the illegal operation message is implanted there and will not click or boot away...the details click gives the shell32.dll message i have made reference to above .......ditto all in safe mode.........if i try the boot disk, i end at A:\> prompt with no knowledge of what to do................not able to disable plugins or anything else thru normal navigation.....hoping someone can get me going from the A:\> prompt and the utilities in the help menu from the bootup disk.............i thought i could go from A:\>C:\> to C:\>WINDOWS   and the pc would boot to windows desktop, but it will not...............
Do you boot from the bootfloppy created by W98? Then insert the W98 CD in the cd-player. Go to the c:>windows rename win.com to win.old using the following command:

ren win.com win.old

Go back to the a: prompt type the command that I gave you above.

Please be sure that the destination directory is WINDOWS and NOT windows.001.

This should be enough to start windows again with no problems.
