asked on

dump 2 or more filesystems to 1 tape

I want to use dump to backup several filesystems.

Can someone tell me how?
I can backup one.
I think it has something to do with the mt command.
I'm using Redhat 5.2 (linux)

I assume that you problem is that the tape rewinds after a dump.
Then you have to use a non-rewinding tape device to dump's -t option. This allows to write several dumps one after the anothet on the same tape: Don't forget to rewind the tape at the end.

Yes I suppose that is what I want to do.
I'm using /dev/st0 for my tape device.
Is there a different device that doesn't rewind?
Or, is there a way to make a device not rewind?
My tape is a connor/seagate 4mm DAT drive.  4GB/8GB

yes there are different devices, not shure about the names,
probaly /dev/nrst0 for non-rwind or /dev/nrst0.0
The trick is that they differ in the minor device number, while the major number is equal, see man st.

Sorry about the above post--I hit reload which reposted.

I'll look into nrst0.  Thanks.

Yeap that did it.  Thanks.

If you propose an answer, I'll accept it so that you can get
the points.
