Internet Explorer / Java problems
I am using Windows 2000 and am having serious problems with Internet Explorer.
A lot of the time when I goto a page, I will get an error "Internet Explorer cannot open <URL>". It occurs atleast hald of the time. IT seem to be related to pages that have Java / Jscript in them. For example when I check my HOTMAIL and I am loading the INBOX page, I will get this error. If I am lucky enough to be able to view the page, I can't delete messages, because everytime I mark the checkbox next to a message I get a Jscript error.
The problems began a couple of days ago when I tried viewing a webpage and all of a sudden, adware windows popped up and an x-rated dialer program started to automatically install itself. I told it to uninstall, but a whole bunch of ad programs were then resident in TASK MANAGER. I deleted these programs from Microsoft Windows Startup Run registry setting, and ran SPYBOT to delete all the spyware that this dialer installed without my permission.
I've tried everything - reinstalling IE 6, applying SP4 patch, re-registering IE DLLs (ie. mshtml.dll, jscript.dll), reinstalling Sun Java packages, reinstalling JAVA VM, changing security settings in INTERNET OPTIONS, allowing full control of ActiveX controls, etc. I have even disabled features in Spybot that I thought may have been conflicting.
Anyone have any ideas what I can except for re-installing the operating system from scratch?

Looks like you may still adware installed.
1. If you have Windows Messenger Service, disable it. The Messenger service is typically not needed for home users.
Right-click My Computer and click Manage.
Fold out the Services and Applications option and click Services.
Right-click the Messenger entry, select Properties, and choose Disable under Startup Type.
Click OK.
You should no longer receive messages sent via the messenger service.
2. Use the following scanners to find and remove the website.
SpyBot S&D searches your harddisk for so-called spy- or adbots;

Adaware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Download the lastest updates and run the scanner.
3. Some porn websites redirects links to their websites using your HOSTS file. Do a search for the HOSTS (without extension) file and remove the entry.
4. If still no joy, download HijackThis from Spywareinfo download page

Run the program and you will find many entries. Most are OK. Post the log. I will find the problem for you.
5. For future preventive maintenance, make sure programs cannot just download on your computer without your permission. From the Internet Toolbar, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced. Make sure "Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer)" and "Enable Install On Demand (Other)" are unchecked.

Ummm war1 sleepdemon is using Win2000 which does not have a System Restore and sleepdemon has has already used Spybot. :)

Hi guys. Thanks for the reply. I have been busy working through your recommendations.
I have identified a few other faulty behaviours that may indicate what this problem is:
If I open an Internet Explorer Window and in the Address Bar type "C:\", Internet Explorer crashes and I get a message that the application will be closed. This never happened before.
Opening new browser windows takes a lot longer than normal.
Clicking on a JAVA object in a browser window (like a menu bar) immediately causes a Java error.
Clicking on a link that points to a file that should be downloaded (ie. EXE or ZIP) does absolutely nothing. I am forced to right-click and use SAVE AS.
I can't use Windows Update. When I goto the site, either nothing appears or the opening page will appear but there is no option to Scan for New Updates.
Opening a link in a new window either does not work or it is terribly slow. If I right-click on the window where the link originated, the new window will then open up automatically (this is a little trick I've learned to use as a work around for now). But if I just let it take it's time, it freezes the window where the link was and then eventually opens up a new window minutes later.
These problems only show up in Internet Explorer. Everything works fine in Netscape and Opera browsers. This would lead one to believe that it is then a problem only with IE, but because IE is so integrated with the Operating System, it's not necessarily a given.
So, I've reinstalled IE (uninstalled and installed again). I've done a virus check. I've used Spybot S&D. I've reinstalled SUN Java Realtime 1.42. I've enabled all the scripting and java features in Internet Options and Advanced features in IE Setup. I've re-applied all patches for Windows 2000 and IE (including Win2kSP4). I've reinstalled Windows Scripting 5.6. I made sure that Messenger service was not enabled. Enable Install On Demand has never been used in Internet Options. I learned this the hard way a long time ago, so I am not really sure how this Porn Dialer was even allowed to run on my computer in the first place. I even uninstalled the program yet it still left all the adware components on my system. I've checked the Hosts file and there's nothing in it except the 'localhost' entry.
I am still not able to load certain pages (getting Internet Explorer cannot open blah blah error - even when viewing Experts-Exchange webpages!!!!) The most annoying so far is Hotmail. Most times I can't even load my Inbox page.
The only thing left to do is:
Remove all adware-blocking programs.
Repair IE.
Run Adaware and HijackThis.
Perform and in-place upgrade of Windows 2000. (last choice)
I've removed all the adware-blocking programs including Spybot.
I've tried to Repair IE (rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenanc
I ran Adaware and it identified 69 objects!!! I can't understand why it found so many because I've ran Spybot a dozen times and it appears to have removed everything.... but Adaware found stuff I didn't even know existed on my system. I am going to get Adaware to remove these items and reboot.
I ran HijackThis and it didn't find anything majorily revolting. There were a few IE BRowser Helper objects in there that I didn't need and I just deleted them. I'm pasting the log file from this scan. Let me know if you see anything peculiar:

And finally, an in-place upgrade of Windows 2000 has been my last resort. I am going to reboot first and see if any of this stuff helped. If not, I guess I am going to have to bite the bullet and go for the upgrade. I'd prefer not to though. Re-configuring personalized settings and tweaking my system is not my idea of a fun weekend.

I have identified a few other faulty behaviours that may indicate what this problem is:
If I open an Internet Explorer Window and in the Address Bar type "C:\", Internet Explorer crashes and I get a message that the application will be closed. This never happened before.
Opening new browser windows takes a lot longer than normal.
Clicking on a JAVA object in a browser window (like a menu bar) immediately causes a Java error.
Clicking on a link that points to a file that should be downloaded (ie. EXE or ZIP) does absolutely nothing. I am forced to right-click and use SAVE AS.
I can't use Windows Update. When I goto the site, either nothing appears or the opening page will appear but there is no option to Scan for New Updates.
Opening a link in a new window either does not work or it is terribly slow. If I right-click on the window where the link originated, the new window will then open up automatically (this is a little trick I've learned to use as a work around for now). But if I just let it take it's time, it freezes the window where the link was and then eventually opens up a new window minutes later.
These problems only show up in Internet Explorer. Everything works fine in Netscape and Opera browsers. This would lead one to believe that it is then a problem only with IE, but because IE is so integrated with the Operating System, it's not necessarily a given.
So, I've reinstalled IE (uninstalled and installed again). I've done a virus check. I've used Spybot S&D. I've reinstalled SUN Java Realtime 1.42. I've enabled all the scripting and java features in Internet Options and Advanced features in IE Setup. I've re-applied all patches for Windows 2000 and IE (including Win2kSP4). I've reinstalled Windows Scripting 5.6. I made sure that Messenger service was not enabled. Enable Install On Demand has never been used in Internet Options. I learned this the hard way a long time ago, so I am not really sure how this Porn Dialer was even allowed to run on my computer in the first place. I even uninstalled the program yet it still left all the adware components on my system. I've checked the Hosts file and there's nothing in it except the 'localhost' entry.
I am still not able to load certain pages (getting Internet Explorer cannot open blah blah error - even when viewing Experts-Exchange webpages!!!!) The most annoying so far is Hotmail. Most times I can't even load my Inbox page.
The only thing left to do is:
Remove all adware-blocking programs.
Repair IE.
Run Adaware and HijackThis.
Perform and in-place upgrade of Windows 2000. (last choice)
I've removed all the adware-blocking programs including Spybot.
I've tried to Repair IE (rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenanc
I ran Adaware and it identified 69 objects!!! I can't understand why it found so many because I've ran Spybot a dozen times and it appears to have removed everything.... but Adaware found stuff I didn't even know existed on my system. I am going to get Adaware to remove these items and reboot.
I ran HijackThis and it didn't find anything majorily revolting. There were a few IE BRowser Helper objects in there that I didn't need and I just deleted them. I'm pasting the log file from this scan. Let me know if you see anything peculiar:

Running In Place Upgrade usually doesn't cause you to loose your settings. Some may get lost but most of them should still be there.
You do have some entries in your HijackThis log that you should not have. Give me a few minutes to identified them.

By the way, repairing IE didn't seem to do the trick (I was crossing my fingers).
Also with Adaware, I went to the screen that showed all the objects it found. I checked each one and then press NEXt. It seemed to be deleting these items (quarantine) and then the program became very slow. It appeared that it had finished doing what it was supposed to do, so I pressed NEXT again and then it started deleting the objects again (taking it's sweet old time). Finally after doing this for awhile, I closed the program. It didn't seem to want to go to the next screen.
I got to tell you I don't trust Adaware completely. I just ran it and it identified a couple things that aren't Spy/Adware.

Well, I checked everything twice to make sure it truly was something I didn't want on my system..... so I think so far I am ok with that. But like I said I can't believe the differences between what Spybot and Adaware picked up.
Did you run SpyBots update before using it to scan? Everytime I run SpyBot I run the update first.

Yes, I run the update function each and everytime too. But as an example, I ran Spybot this morning and it found some malware from the porn dialer and then now running Adaware found similar programs even though Spybot apparently deleted them. Plus it found a whole bunch of other stuff.

Well, you won't believe it! Everything is fixed and is working even better than before the recent problems even started. I no longer get JAVA errors at all. It's a dream come true!
What I did was I used the IE Repair function. It seemed to help out a bit.....some of the issues were resolved.. (I wasn't getting nearly as many errors and I could then now use Windows Update with no problem.
But I was still getting a lot of errors and IE was crashing from time to time....
So I took your advice and deleted all those items in HijackThis and rebooted and everything worked perfectly. Looks as if the BHOs were causing the problems for the most part.
So given that... I want to thank you all.. and I think that the points should be split since both Crazyone and War1 both contributed greatly to the resolution.
